Tires

Don’t get left out in the cold

shutterstock_109218068When the temperature hits 7°C regular tires, including most All Season tires, will not grip the road as efficiently. Winter tires have been specially engineered to perform at colder temperatures. Gripping the road whether you are driving, stopping, or even parked, is the key to safety.

All of the Grande Prairie Auto Group Stores can change over your winter tires on any make or model. Contact us today to schedule your appointment.

Another deep subject: Tread Depth

As important as the tire compound is, tread depth is also very important, all year round. Tread depth is the amount of distance between the top and bottom of the tire tread, and normally starts out at 11/32-inch or 8.7mm deep. This allows water, ice, snow, or sand to travel between the treads, be pushed out along the tread design, and keep some of the surface of the tire in contact with the road. As your tires wear down you will eventually need to replace them as they become unsafe and are not able to provide that separation. That may lead to a loss of traction.

For summer or performance tires, the minimum safe tread depth is 4/32-=inch, or about 3.2mm. For Winter tires, 5/32-inch, 4mm, is the minimum, though that may vary based on local conditions. IF you live in a rural area, or an area that doesn’t clean the streets down to the pavement, tires should be replaced earlier to provide traction.
